The original log cabin was constructed in 1854. The cabin offered Jane a space for a stove and dry sink. A loft for storage and later used as a sleeping loft for the children. There was room for a full sized bed and some extra room for their new daughter to play. As the family grew the log cabin seemed to shrink. In 1867 the family nearly quadrupled the size of their house. The addition included a parlor, a small room off the parlor, and four bedrooms upstairs.
