Description

The Altama Museum of Art & History is housed in the 1911 Brazell House, designed and built for the Crawford W. Brazell family by noted architect-builder Ivey Crutchfield. Large columns, multi-hipped rooflines and grand porches define the exterior of the neoclassical home.

As a residence, the home boasted two full restrooms and electric lights, significant as the surrounding area did not have electric service for another 30 years. Surviving interior details include beautiful mantels and trim, tongue and groove paneled ceilings, heart pine floors, and original chandeliers. Soaring rolled glass windows and 15 foot ceilings contribute to a light and airy environment that highlights the museum's collections.

Visitors will enjoy a selection of contemporary Southern Art and antique prints, fine furniture, period costume and one of the largest collections of Staffordshire porcelain on public display in the United States. Temporary exhibits and events of both artistic and historical focus are offered throughout the museum's September-May season. Private tours are also available at no cost throughout the year with advance appointment.
